What This Exercise Does
Standing weight shifts help you transition from crutch-dependent walking to bearing weight on your surgical leg. This exercise rebuilds trust in your knee and prepares you for more challenging exercises.
- Reloads the surgical leg: Gradually increases weight bearing tolerance
- Improves balance: Challenges your proprioceptive system
- Builds confidence: Helps overcome fear of putting weight on your knee
- Prepares for walking: Essential step toward normal gait
Step-by-Step Instructions
Set Up Safely
Stand between two sturdy surfaces (counter, chair backs, or parallel bars) that you can hold for support. Have your feet shoulder-width apart.
Shift Weight to Non-Surgical Leg
Start by shifting your weight onto your non-surgical leg. Feel your weight transfer over that foot.
Shift Weight to Surgical Leg
Slowly shift your weight over to your surgical leg. Go only as far as comfortable. Use the support surfaces as needed.
Pro Tip
Watch yourself in a mirror to ensure you're shifting evenly and not compensating with your hips.
Continue Shifting Side to Side
Rock back and forth between legs in a controlled manner. Gradually increase how much weight you place on the surgical leg as comfort allows.
Progress to Forward/Backward
Once side-to-side feels comfortable, try shifting weight forward onto your toes and back onto your heels.
